Machado Meyer Advogados has helped Brazilian sanitation company BRK Ambiental win the rights to run the water and sewage services in the northeastern city of Maceió with a bid worth 2 billion reais (US$354 million).

The company won the concession on 30 September.

Brazil's Development Bank (BNDES), which structured the water and sewage project, relied on Felsberg Advogados for the deal. The project is part of the bank's Investments Partnerships Programme (PPI).

BNDES created PPI in 2016 to increase the role of private sector companies in local infrastructure projects.

During the 35-year contract, BRK aims to guarantee universal drinking water services for Maceió within the first six years. It will also boost the local wastewater collection to cover 90% of the population within 16 years, up from 27%.

BRK is majority-owned by Canadian asset manager Brookfield, which holds a 70% stake. Brazil's workers' severance fund FI-FGTS owns the remaining stake.
